Two years ago the Mission Team at Carnalea decided to give money raised at church events to Helen Moorehead for the school for deaf children in Kamatunga. She has been very good at keeping us informed and on Sunday 28th February she came and spoke at a service and told us all the ways the CMC money had helped.

Helen had been back to Kenya in August and September 2015 to visit theschool and see the 6 children she started with as they left school. The school has been expanded and now educates 80 children! There are dormitories, a water irrigation system and a lovely church, which the whole community use to worship. Helen loves it that the deaf children are now worshipping alongside members of the local community. Reverend Patrick is the minister.

Of the original 6 children: 3 are going to High School and 3 to Technical College. One of them, Aaron, was number 1 in the exams for the whole of Tharaka province and is going to be sponsored by Equity Bank to go to school in Nairobi with a translator. The digital hearing aids he needs can also be provided from the money raised at CMC.

Helen told us how as a Mission Partner you share in the joys and sorrows ofthe people around you. Rachel, her first housemother, worked with Helen for 5 years and then was able to go off to teacher training college. There she met a man from a rich family and had a very fancy wedding in Kamatunga Chapel which they were all invited to attend while Helen was there.  The 6 boys were dressed for the wedding by Helen at the local market.

Sadly, Francis, who helped build the church, suffered the loss of his brother James, who was badly beaten by thieves. But again Helen was able to help.

Peter, one of the original 6 boys, is now able to be apprenticed as a welder. His mother sent her thanks to the people of Ireland. When Peter was born her husband chased her into the bush because she had given birth to a disabled child. She is so thankful to God for all that He has done for her and Peter.

All sorts of agricultural enterprises have been set up with funds raised in Ireland. 13 goats were purchased and a chicken house has been built so that everyone can now have eggs. The boys have learnt how to inject the chickens against disease and to look after them.  Play equipment, such as play hoops, footballs and skipping ropes have been bought for the children. All 80 children have also been provided with a lovely blue uniform.

Our President Brian Anderson visited Kenya and met Rev Patrick.

Lots of the equipment in the school and clothes for the children (including Northern Ireland football jerseys!) have been provided by the Container Ministry and Helen was very thankful for that.

While she was there a laptop broke down so again she had the funds to buy a new one. This enables the deaf children to see visuals on the large screen. Helen finished by giving God all the glory for the great things He has done in Kamatunga School.
