The Surf Project helps people to discover and experience what it really means to live life to the full.  Carnalea Methodist are supporting their work at Portrush and throughout Ireland  over the next 2 years.

The Surf Project, based in Portrush and led by Jono and Beth Griffin. Jono came to speak at our Sunday service on 6th November.

Their mission is to share the love of God with young people, through the sport of surfing. They were commissioned as a Pioneer Mission in 2013. Jono said there is so much to celebrate in the way God has been working through this project. John 10:10 “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”

This verse gives them their mission statement: Living life to the full and Living Life to the Full workshops are held after surfing and eating with the young people. Jono said: God is interested in our personal and social life. Spirituality is entwined with all of this. We want to breakdown the preconceptions many hold of what church is. The reluctance many have to go into a church building.

Fulfilment, purpose, meaning is what many are looking for and find in Christ. It is in creation and Christ that we come closer to God. What better way to get closer to God than in the ocean, His creation. Relational ministry is at the core of The Surf Project. It’s inclusive, not dictating, not telling.

Every child matters! Every relationship makes a difference! This was written in a parent’s response to a Surf Project weekend his child attended and now appears on much of their publicity. 3,000 young people have been connected with the project. Beth and Jono work full-time and they have 3 interns working with them too. £50,000 was spent initially on equipping the project and they got it back in 6 months! Jono believes that vision and action together can change the world. It’s about stepping out in faith!

He asked: Are you stepping out of your comfort zone? Following the Great Commission we were given by Jesus in Matthew 28:16-20
“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations…..and surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
A fund-raising soup and cheese lunch was held after the service to raise money for our own young people to go to The Surf Project for a weekend in March. Thank you to all who attended and helped with the lunch. £500 was raised.
