“The word of the Lord was very rare in those days…” There was a lot of religious activity but God’s voice wasn’t being heard. God took the initiative with Samuel. We also have to believe that God wants to speak to us!
God speaks to us through His word. “All scripture is God-breathed..” 2Tim, 3 v16
God choose Samuel, not Eli the big leader. He spoke to the one who would listen! Did you ever notice that Samuel was in the Tabernacle, in front of the Ark of the Covenant? He was in the place where God was likely to speak. He was intentional in seeking God – we have to be too if we want to hear from Him.
Are you happy to be alone with God? If God had a face, what expression would be on it as He looked at you? Don’t you know how much He loves and cares for you? He’s waiting and He will always be delighted to see us. (Think of The Prodigal Son. The Father ran to meet him when he was still a long way off, hugged him and started celebrating!) HE’S LOOKING FOR YOU BUT YOU NEED TO BE QUIET TO HEAR WHAT HE HAS TO SAY.
We need an intentional space in our lives, nothing routine or legalistic, but regular. Then we can pray:
“Here I am Lord, speak.”
Or, as David said: “To you oh Lord I lift up my soul.”
